KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen teams participating in the inaugural Dato’ Theng Book Cup Malaysian Media Badminton Tournament discovered their fate last Saturday when the draw for grouping took place at the MCA Selangor Public Services and Complaints Centre in Petaling Jaya.

The draw brought some interesting match-ups with China Press, Malaysia Chinese Photojournalists Association (MCPA) and Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) in Group A, while RTM, Oriental Daily and The Star were drawn in group B.

Group C looked a tricky tie with promising teams namely the Penang media team, 8TV and Sin Chew Daily all drawn together. Group D had the biggest grouping with ASTRO, One Titan Media, Nanyang Siang Pau and NTV7 battling out for the qualifying.

After the round robin, the top two teams of each group will advance to the quarterfinals for the cross-over knock-out game, competing for the champion title.

The event, jointly organised by Malaysia’s first and only online Chinese sports news portal One Titan Media (1titan.com) and ManagePay Systems Berhad, will take place at the Pioneer Badminton Centre in Endah Parade, Sri Petaling on May 1, 2011.

Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek is expected to launch the Tournament at 8.30am on the event day. All participants and invited guests will be treated for a dinner at the prize-giving ceremony at Guinness Anchor Brewery in Petaling Jaya in that evening.

The Tournament, which was named after ManagePay Systems Chairman Dato’ Theng Book, is held in conjunction with ManagePay Systems’ listing on the Bursa Malaysia’s ACE Market recently.

Dato’ Theng said the event is a good opportunity to build rapport and good relations among media organisations in the country, adding that it is also a channel to show recognition and appreciation for the professionalism and hard work of the Malaysian news practitioners.

The champion team will walk away with RM2,688 cash, the Champion’s Cup, team trophy, player medals and FLEET product gifts. The second place will receive RM1,888 cash, team trophy, player medals and FLEET product gifts; the third place RM1,288 cash, team trophy, player medals and FLEET product gifts; and the fourth place RM888 cash, team trophy, player medals and FLEET product gifts.

Apart from its title sponsor ManagePay Systems, the Dato’ Theng Book Cup also received favourable contributions and supports from companies of various business sectors and industries. Ajiya Berhad was the main sponsor and Ebara Pumps Malaysia Sdn Bhd the co-sponsor. Renowned badminton brand FLEET was also the premier sponsor of the game. Other sponsors included Revive, Milo, ASTRO, Sports Toto and Kaspersky Lab.

At the sponsorship presentation were ManagePay Systems Berhad Chairman Dato’ Theng Book; FLEET International Holdings Sdn Bhd Chairman Mr Teo Tong Wah and General Manager Ms Lim Hui Hui; Kaspersky Lab Channel Sales Director of SEA Region Mr Jimmy Fong; Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd Communications Manager Ms Emily Tan; MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd Events and Communications Assistant Vice President Ms Ooi See Bee; MCA Selangor Public Services and Complaints Bureau Deputy Chief Mr Kelvin Chong; One Titan Media Editor-in-Chief Mr Lim Chee Sen.
